The first packet is recognized as a NetBIOS over TCP (NBT) packet. Because tcpdump can interpret some of the information about the packet, it tells you that “somehost” was performing a NetBIOS broadcast query, probably trying to look up a hostname for an IP address on the network. networking - KVM Windows Guest Vlan Tagging - Server Fault Another odd thing is that if I ping from the windows machine to the linux machine, the first timeout given is from the local IP and the other 3 timeouts are given from the external address (default GW). So it looks like windows can't handle the interface for package other then UDP. windows - NTP can't synchronise - Server Fault

That is interesting, I did the same on my Linux desktop. I created new Fx profile, turned off all autoupdates, malware blocking, turned off speed-dial and no addons were present, so Firefox should not make any connections on startup.
